Measuring Research Impact: Non Traditional Research Outputs (NTROs)

In this guide you will gain a basic understanding of how to measure your research impact.

What are NTRO's?

In addition to traditional research outputs such at journal articles, books, book chapters, and conference proceeding, creative works can be published too. There are known as Non-Traditional Research Outputs and can include things like art, music, dance, design, web design, exhibitions and commissioned reports.

They must meet the same overarching eligibility criteria as other outputs:

  • meet the definition of research
  • be published or made publicly available within the reference period
  • have one or more eligible researcher(s) listed within the output
  • be an eligible research output type.

How can NTRO's be measured?

There are several way to measure the impact of your NTRO:

  • Altmetrics can measure the social media media mentions or media mentions of your output.
  • The outcome of your event can be used to measure your output. How many people attended? Does the exhibition space have a good reputation? Was it covered by the media?
  • The support material for your research is also measurable. Did you have promotional material? Is there a recording available?
