Note: The first reference to a source should be cited in full. If a short title was only first provided in the footnotes, it should be provided in the text when first used.

Use the full title in the bibliography. 

Short titles are only used in the text and footnotes of your assignment. 

What else can I use this rule for?

You can use this for abbreviating an institution's name, theory, or other information; some examples include:

  • Australian Bureau of Statistics ('ABS')
  • Australian Institue of Health and Welfare ('AIHW')
  • World Trade Organization ('WTO') 
  • World Health Organization ('WHO')
  • United Nations ('UN')
  • International Court of Justice ('ICJ')
