CWYW - How to...

Mendeley's CWYW capabilities come from a plug in you can add to your Word software under the 'References' tab.

Please note: if you are using a CDU device you will need to log a job with ITMS to get permission to access the Microsoft plug in for Mendeley.

Step 1

In the Mendeley desktop app, select 'Tools' from the top menu.

In the drop down, select 'Install Mendeley Cite for Microsoft Word' to open the brower.

Step 2

On the brower you will be taken to the Mendeley site.

Here, select 'Get Mendeley Cite' to open the online web store.

You can also access this page directly from your Online Mendeley account.

Step 3

From the web store Mendeley Cite page, select 'Get it now' to download the plug in to your computer.

Please note: people on a CDU device need to request permission from ITMS to add the plug in to their computer.

Once downloaded, the Mendeley Cite plug in can be located under the 'References' tab in Word.

When you first open Mendeley Cite you will be required to sign in so the plug in can provide access to your library of resources.

When logging in, select institutional login and confirm with your CDU account.

This will make certain that you continue to access your library as well as the premium features of the software.

Once logged in there are two main sections.

The first section 'References' contains your entire library.

You can scroll or search to find the resource you want to cite in your document.

To view resources from a specific group or collection, select 'All References' in the drop down above the search bar.

This will open a pop up where you can choose which collection/group you would like to scroll and search for resources.

The second tab in the top menu is 'Citation Settings'.

Click this to change the referencing style you are using in this document.

You can also change the language the citations will be written in.

A preview will be provided to show you what the style looks like.

Step 1

Select the reference or references you would like to add to your document.

Once selected, the tick box should turn blue.

Step 2

Before adding the citation to your document double check, it is correct.

To edit a citation, click on the citation bubble above the insert button.

Step 3

Once you click to edit the citation a pop up will open.

This will allow you to change the display type i.e. (Author, Year) to Author (Year).

You can also add a page value (this is important when you are quoting) as well as prefix and suffixes as needed.

Make sure to save your changes as you exit to insert the correct citation.

Step 4

Whether you have made changes or not, adding the citation to the document is easy.

Simply click 'Insert # citation' beneath the citation bubble to add the citation to the document.

Please note: the citation will be added to the document at the location of your cursor.

Step 1

To add a reference list / bibliography to your document, select the three dots in the top right-hand corner.

From here select 'Insert Bibliography' to add it to your document.

Note: whether you require a 'reference list' or 'bibliography' this function will work for both.

Step 2

Pay attention to the fact that the list will be inserted at the point your cursor currently is in the document.

Step 3

Once added to the document you can edit the format and links in the reference list.

To edit the references, make sure to change the reference in Mendeley. Then click the three dots in the top right-hand corner and select 'Update from library'.
