EndNote Guide: Working with Word

EndNote is a reference organiser and writing solution. It is the ideal, time-saving software to enable students to collect references and then use this library to add citations to a Word document

Cite While You Write

Cite While You Write

The Cite While You Write (CWYW) Toolbar is automatically created in Microsoft Word when you download  EndNote software to your computer. The toolbar is used to add your references 'in text' as you write and it will also create a reference list or Bibliography at the end of the document automatically.

The toolbar allows you to move between your EndNote library and your Word document. Other functions allow you to edit and manage citations, change reference styles and convert your document to show citations which are formatted incorrectly.

Top 3 Things to Remember

Top 3 Things to Remember

  1. Use one EndNote library for all of your writing and use EndNote groups to manage your references.
  2. Use the Edit and Manage Citation command to make changes to citations in documents. Do NOT use the Delete or Backspace keys on the keyboard to remove the citations.
  3. If you are using footnote styles, your word processor controls the numbering and placement of the footnote and EndNote controls the formatting. So you will first need to insert the footnote using your word processor, then insert the EndNote citation into that footnote.

Compatibility

Check if your computer and current systems are ready to go:

Please note, if using Office 365, it must be installed for EndNote to work

EndNote with Windows

Editing References

If you have mentioned the author or year in your paragraph then you may wish to remove them from your citation. You can also add page numbers to the citation if you have directly quoted a work.

  • Click on the reference.
  • Select Edit and Manage Citations
  • Edit the citation as needed. Some of the Edit Citation options include excluding the author or year or adding page numbers.

CWYW Toolbar Missing

If you have installed EndNote and the Cite While You Write (CWYW) toolbar does not appear in MS Word 2016 or the CWYW tools do not function as expected, please follow the instructions at the link. There are different steps for Windows and Mac.
