Books and eBooks are good academic sources of information. They give a thorough overview of a topic, are usually well researched and have undergone a stringent publication and editorial process. This does mean they can take a long time to be published.

Australian History Books

Archaeology of Aboriginal Australia

Published in 1999

During the past thirty years the human history of the Australian continent has become the object of intense national and international interest. These years have been the 'decades of discovery', featuring fieldwork and analyses which have rewritten the distant past of Australia almost on a yearly basis

The Biggest Estate on Earth

Published in 2012

Across Australia, early Europeans commented that the land looked like a park. With extensive grassy patches, open woodlands and abundant wildlife. Bill Gammage discovered this was because Aboriginal people managed the land in a far more systematic and scientific fashion than ever realised.

Historical dictionary of Australian Aborigines

Published in 2011

The settlement of this vast continent was a venture of heroic proportions. This book relates the history of Australia's Indigenous inhabitants from their arrival on the continent 60,000 years ago to the centuries long European colonization process starting in the 1600s to their role in today's Australia.

The Original Australians

Published in 2006

This book tells the story of Australian Aboriginal history and society from distant beginnings to present day. From the wisdom of the Dreamtime, to first contacts between Europeans and Indigenous Australians, through to modern times, it offers an insight into the experiences of the world's oldest culture.

The Other Side of the Frontier

Published in 2006

Now an Australian classic, in 1981 this book changed our understanding of historical relations between Indigenous Australians and European settlers. Drawing from documentary and oral evidence, the book describes in compelling detail the ways in which Aborigines responded to the European arrival.

The Protectors

Published in 2011

On 13 February 2008 Rudd and Nelson gave two very different apology speeches to the Stolen Generations. Rudd alluded to racism, eugenics and immorality of past policies. Nelson spoke of benign intentions, goodness and the hurt felt by those accused of wrongdoings. Both cannot be true - or could they?

A Wild History

Published in 2012

Drawing on research into obscure and rich documentary sources, Aboriginal oral traditions, and firsthand investigations conducted over thirty five years, Lewis pieces together interactions between the environment, the powerful and warlike Aboriginal tribes and the settlers and their cattle.
