Installing EndNote X6

File Downloads

EndNote software is available for CDU staff and students. This is the current version available for Windows and Macintosh.

Staff can install the latest version of EndNote for Windows via the "Install CDU software" option: look for Thomson Reuters EndNote X6. (CDU reference styles are saved on the Z drive. Follow the instructions in the box below to change the Folder location)

You should also remove any previous versions of EndNote before installing EndNote X5.

Download EndNote X6 for Windows and Macintosh

(Often the Norton anti-virus software will block new software downloads so we recommend you disable it briefly, install EndNote and then ensure you enable it again.)

Styles, filters and connections
These should be saved into the folder where the EndNote styles, filters and connection files have been stored (usually in the Program Files folder on the C Drive).

If you experience any problems downloading the EndNote Software please email us for assistance: endnote@cdu.edu.au

For instruction on using  EndNote please consult the Tutorials and Guides Tab

Installing EndNote X5

CDU reference styles

After downloading the EndNote software you also need to add the CDU referencing styles (and filters and connections)

CDU Styles

From the link above click the ‘download CDU styles’ link. Choose ‘open with’. Double click on the CDU styles 2011 folder and copy all the styles.

You must insert the style files in the correct folder where your copy of EndNote has been installed. For Windows, this will usually be C:\ProgramFiles\EndNoteX5\Styles. Look in the EndNote X5 folder in your Applications folder if you use a Macintosh. If you do not save the styles correctly you will not be able to access them from the Import Manager when using EndNote.

Once you have saved the CDU styles (same goes for filters and connections) you need to set preferences to point to the correct folder.

In EndNote, click on Edit on the top menu bar. From the dropdown menu select Preferences.

When the EndNote Preferences window opens, click on Folder Locations on the left-hand side.

This will show you the current settings for your personal folders. If you have installed EndNote on your computer for the first time, it will probably look something like this

Folder locations

You should then click on ‘Select folder’ for styles and ensure you have selected the correct location of your CDU styles ie: C:\ProgramFiles\EndNoteX5\Styles or Z:\EndNote\2013 addon files\CDU styles 2013. This process will then allow you to 'select another style' in your EndNote library and choose the preferred style for your school ie: CDU-Harvard.

    What is EndNote?

EndNote is a Bibliographic Management tool which allows you to add references manually or automatically from Library databases to your EndNote Library.

References added to the EndNote software are stored in an EndNote Library and can be inserted in a Word document as you write your essay or research. EndNote then creates a Reference list at the end of your document.

EndNote allows you to organise your research and collect your citations into a searchable library.

    EndNote Overview

Top 10 things to remember about EndNote

Top 10 Things to Remember about EndNote

    1. EndNote does not replace the style manual. It will make it easier to follow the manual, but you will still need the manual.

    2. Garbage in, garbage out. So check your import results, especially when working with sources such as Google Scholar that may have inconsistent data.

    3. Use one EndNote library for all of your writing. It will make your life easier in the long run.

    4. Use the Edit Citation command to make changes to citations in documents. Trying to make changes on the screen risks corrupting the EndNote citations.

    5. If you are using footnote styles, your word processor controls the numbering and placement of the footnote and EndNote controls the formatting. So you will first need to insert the footnote using your word processor, then insert the EndNote cita-tion into that footnote.

    6. EndNote provides five ways of importing references:

    ·         Online search

    ·         Direct export

    ·         Importing text files

    ·         Importing PDF files

    ·         Through the Capture button in EndNote Web, which can import one record at a time into either an EndNote or an EndNote Web library.

The method you use will depend on which databases you need to work with. Talk to your librarian about searching online databases. They can tell you which databases you have available to you and the best way of searching them.

    7. Online search uses the Z39.50 Internet protocol, a standard protocol that was developed just for searching and retrieving bibliographic data. It has limitations.

It does not work through proxy servers.
It does not use the same port your browser uses.
It is not the same protocol your browser uses.

    8. EndNote can be customized.

    9. For collaboration, use the EndNote Web feature set in EndNote to store references online where your entire project team can access them.

    10. Back up your EndNote Libraries.
